We should swap January with February
I think we should swap January with February. The main reason for this is that January is such a long month, in fact it is equally one of the longest! It certainly feels it too!
August is equally as long but because the sunshine is out and days are longer it doesn’t seem half as long as January does.
January is cold, but often so is February. Whatever you call the first month of the year, it will be cold. If we swap January for February, there are still 59-60 days in the first two months but with a shorter first month to ease us into the New Year.
Easing ourselves in
In a morning, we like to ease ourselves into the day. We like to start slowly and ramp up the day bit by bit before we perform to our optimum levels. By swapping January for February we could do the same then too. January would just be four weeks long then.
The harsh reality of a new year and the expectations that it brings start to take their toll on us after a couple of weeks into the New Year. Imagine if by the 15th of the month, you would be over half way through the month and psychologically richer for knowing you’re nearer the next month and are on the way towards Spring.
Longest pay month
Many people in Britain get paid early in December due to Christmas. They then have longer for their pay to stretch through to their next pay day.
This isn’t a problem for large sections of the nation, but it is definitely a problem for some. Not everyone can plan appropriately so they can last out until their January pay day when they get paid earlier and have more demands on their hard earned cash over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. It is a big problem for many people.
By making the first month of the year shorter, even by a few days, it will make a difference to these people who find it hard.
There is the argument that we should go one step further and create an extra month! If you come to think of it, having some months as 31 days, some as 30 days and one as 28 or 29 dependent on what year it is makes little sense and is a very complicated method of time management.
Why not split our 365 days into 13 months of 28 days? We could have a ‘leap day’ (effectively as a bank holiday) once a year in the summertime on a special extra day next to a weekend so we can all enjoy it for longer. For the leap years, you just bolt on another one of these extra days to that special extra day creating a special leap weekend.
This would be a much more enjoyable way rather than having an extra long January and a bonus leap day at the end of February when it is too cold here to enjoy it.
What do you reckon? Let me know in the comments section below.
Disclaimer: I don’t expect any of this to happen, it is a frivolous article injecting a sense of fun into a long month and playing it out into what the other possibilities could be, but won’t be. But could they?!
