Why I am doing this marathon?
Having been massively impressed and influenced by marathon running friends and those around me recently, and having experienced race days a bit more recently, it has got me thinking about what was possible and achievable for me again with some serious hard work. Could I do another marathon?
I’ve not ran regularly or consistently over the last 18 months to 2 years or so, and while I successfully completed the Manchester Marathon last year in 2017, I didn’t feel like I gave as much as I could have done having picked up an injury part way through (though that wasn’t the only reason I didn’t do as well as I could). I still feel that I could do more than I am doing currently.
One thing I have been aware of since April last year is that I haven’t had a target to aim for. When you are wandering aimlessly, you can end up going the wrong direction, or you can end up not even bothering! With a target to aim for, you have to discipline yourself to stick as close as possible to a plan. You can’t hide when there is a ‘judgement day’ at the end. You have to turn up and do what you have done. Fail to prepare and prepare to fail, and all that!
I don’t particularly feel in the right shape to be hitting my best performance at the moment, so I need to do things sensibly step by step to get to where I want to be.
With all this in mind, I have set myself a new target. I will need help. I will need support. I will need my backside kicking at times. I will need encouragement. I will also need to be less anxious and less affected by runs that dent my confidence, but I CAN DO THIS!
What I am doing
The target is the Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday 14th October 2018. It will be my FOURTH marathon and I am now entered and I will run it to the best of my best ability that I have at that time.
I am running the race for charity in aid of Alzheimer’s Society. They are a care and research charity who work to improve the quality of life of those those affected by Alzheimer’s – the individuals and their families who are affected by the decreased ability to think and function. So many people are affected by this now and they need help from people who are in a position like I am to do what they can to raise money for this charity.
I would really appreciate it if you could consider donating, even just a small amount to help for this wonderful cause and to encourage me back to longer distance running capability. Here is the link to my Just Giving page – https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/richard-lord-online
